OpenAI to open first office in New Delhi as AI adoption soars in India

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced plans to open the artificial intelligence company’s first office in India later this year in New Delhi. The move underscores India’s rapid growth as a key market and hub for AI innovation, reflecting the company’s commitment to “build AI for India, with India” in collaboration with local stakeholders.

India is now OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States, with ChatGPT users in the country having increased fourfold over the past year. Students comprise the largest group of users globally, highlighting India’s position as a major adopter of AI technologies. Altman praised India’s exceptional technology talent, developer ecosystem, and strong government support under the IndiaAI Mission, which seeks to advance responsible and inclusive AI adoption.

The upcoming New Delhi office will facilitate deeper engagement with government bodies, businesses, educational institutions, developers, and startups to tailor AI solutions to India’s unique needs. OpenAI has already begun recruiting a local team and created an Indian entity as part of this expansion.

In addition to the office setup, OpenAI plans to hold its first Education Summit and Developer Day in India this year to foster community building and knowledge sharing in AI technology. This development follows the launch of the ChatGPT Go plan, an India-specific subscription priced affordably to increase access to premium AI features.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI’s decision, citing India’s growing digital infrastructure and leadership in the global AI landscape. The partnership is viewed as a significant step in cementing India’s role as a global AI leader.
