Zelensky rejects US mineral demands, offers resignation for peace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to resign from his position if it would lead to peace in Ukraine. During a press conference, he stated that he is prepared to step down if it guarantees peace for his country, and he could also negotiate his resignation in exchange for Ukraine’s membership in NATO. This announcement comes amid escalating tensions with former US President Donald Trump, who has been critical of Zelensky and has labelled him a “dictator.”

Zelensky’s remarks are significant, especially given the ongoing conflict with Russia and the recent diplomatic efforts involving US and Russian officials. The Ukrainian president has been pushing for NATO membership as a crucial security guarantee for his country. However, NATO membership remains a contentious issue, with Russia repeatedly stating that Ukraine joining NATO is a red line.

Additionally, Zelensky has been under pressure from the US to sign an economic agreement allowing the US access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals. The proposed deal has been met with resistance from Ukraine, as it does not provide the necessary security guarantees to deter Russian aggression. Zelensky has indicated that he may consider such an agreement if it ensures continued aid for Ukraine, but he has expressed concerns about the terms, particularly the financial burden it could impose on future generations.
