Celebs parade the 2023 Hankook London E-Prix grid as Jake Dennis becomes first British Formula E World Champion
London (United Kingdom): Two-time Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz, Hollywood heart throb, Orlando Bloom and rapper, singer and fashion designer Jaden Smith headlined a star-studded list of celebrities in attendance at the Formula E season finale in London last weekend.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship reached its climax at the ExCeL London with the Hankook London E-Prix double-header of races to decide both Drivers’ and Teams champions.
Known for his starring roles in the likes of Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and Spectre, Waltz was given an adrenaline-fuelled high-speed lap of the track in the official all-electric FIA Formula E Safety Car hitting up to 180 kmh / 112 mph.
Waltz was also invited onto the podium to present the trophy to the winning team, Envision Racing and celebrated Britain’s Jake Dennis, 28, who was presented with the coveted Formula E Drivers’ World Championship title.
He said: “It was great to be at Formula E in London for their season finale and hear the fans celebrate their homegrown World Champion Jake Dennis. I was lucky enough to spend time with some of the team and drivers and have a lap in the Safety Car – that was an experience I’ve never had before. It was an honour to be invited onto the podium and present the trophy to the winning team this season, Envision Racing. Big congratulations to everyone.”
Waltz was joined by Orlando Bloom, who first attended a Formula E race back in 2017; American rapper, singer and fashion designer Jaden Smith, Great Britain’s most successful Olympic athlete, Sir Chris Hoy; ex-England rugby captain Chris Robshaw; and London-based artists Ella Eyre and Tinie Tempah, who both performed at the races this weekend in the Allianz Fan Village.
Bloom said: The last Formula E race I saw was 6yrs ago in Marrakech when the drivers had to change cars mid-race. As an enthusiast, it was fantastic to be in London today and see just how far the cars and the technology have evolved – and of course, to see fellow Brit Jake Dennis win the world championship.
Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship has seen a number of notable names attend races throughout the season, including super model Winnie Harlow, football legend Patrice Evra, Emily in Paris star Lucien Laviscount, with performances from John Legend Martin Garrix, Miguel and French Montana.
Chris Robshaw said: “It’s my first time at Formula E, and it’s been brilliant to see the speed the cars go and the sound they make – well, they don’t make a sound. I’ve had a brilliant time here with Formula E. I’ll be honest after that safety lap, I feel a little bit sick! It’s just the acceleration it’s got and the ability to turn corners so quickly. I went to Goodwood last week, which is the opposite – completely petrol and old school, whereas this is futuristic and electric. Seeing the two extremes was amazing. To have that experience was pretty special.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is the world’s premier all-electric racing series and features unpredictable, intense, wheel-to-wheel street racing in iconic cities around the world – turned into exciting racetracks. (NF/PNN)
